4 Alternative Clock Layouts You Can Use in Xfce 4.18
Today’s Xfce 4.18 release includes an improved clock applet that, among other things, now lets you display the date on a different line to the time. That is pretty neat, and new preset options included make it simple to switch up the arrangement of the date and time to creation some interesting and dynamic layouts. But I’m not here to talk about those. See, I like using a custom layout. Custom layouts let you do more. You can set the order and arrangement of the date and time you want; you can insert separators, emoji, or special characters; and you

This GTK4 Fork of Ubuntu’s Desktop Icons Extension is Pretty Neat
If you’re an avid user of Ubuntu’s desktop icons extension but you wish it did a little bit more there’s an enhanced GTK4 version you need to check out. The perfunctorily-titled ‘Gtk4 Desktop Icons NG’ extension is a direct fork of the regular Desktop Icons NG extension that Ubuntu has shipped with since Ubuntu 21.04 (trivia: that extension is itself a fork of the original desktop icons extension created by GNOME developers). So what’s special about it? For many, the most compelling “feature” of GTK4 Desktop Icons NG is that it — at last! — does what many have longed

Use ‘Ear Tag’ to Quickly Edit Audio Tags on Linux
We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to audio tag editors for Linux, but ever heard the expression ‘sometimes less is more’? It sounds silly but hey: it’s a maxim that resonates with me. Take Ear Tag, a new music tag editor for Linux written in Python and using GTK4/libadwaita. Its a simple, straightforward tool that lets you quickly edit audio tags for individual music files. Unlike fully-featured MP3 tag editors like Kid3, Tagger, or MusicBrainz Picard, Ear Tag doesn’t try to manage your entire music library. And though it can edit metadata for multiple audio files at once it’s

Vivaldi Browser Now Boasts Mastodon Integration
Mastodon is now baked into the latest builds of the Vivaldi web browser. Folks are flocking to this federated social networking service in droves of late, a trend Vivaldi is well aware of. Such keen supporters of decentralised social media, they even launched their own Mastodon instance “Vivaldi Social” a few weeks back. Now they take things a step further by integrating Mastodon inside of the browser itself. Don’t panic if you don’t like the sound of this: it’s a discrete implementation that is easy to ignore or not use. Like Vivaldi’s other bells and whistles — spanning everything from

Linux Mint 21.1 Beta is Available to Download
A brand new beta build of Linux Mint 21.1 “Vera” is available to download. Linux Mint 21.1 beta builds are up on the Linux Mint servers for download, though the milestone is yet to be “officially” announced. This beta is in advance of a planned stable release later this month. As updates go this isn’t the biggest one Mint has put out. It’s more of a collection of iterative improvements rather than a mass of major new ones. At the heart of this update is Cinnamon 5.6. This updated version of the nimble (and rather traditional) desktop environment offers a

20 Years After Its Debut, ClamAV Finally Hits Version 1.0
Does Ubuntu need anti-virus software? The general answer is no, but that doesn’t mean it’s not wise to use some to run a check every now and then. Most folks’ go-to is open source anti-virus ClamAV, an app dedicated to ‘detecting trojans, viruses, malware, and other malicious threats’. ClamAV is available for Windows, macOS, BSD, and Linux systems, making it especially well suited to those who regularly work cross-platform and want some degree of familiarity. And a rather special new version was released this week. ClamAV 1.0 is an LTS Release The first version of ClamAV, which is developed by

Make GNOME Calendar, Clock Icons Show Actual Date and Time
Ever looked at the GNOME Calendar and Clock app icons and thought: “hmm, they’d look much cooler if they showed the current date and the actual time”? Well, a brand new GNOME extension allows them to EXACTLY that! It’s called ‘Dynamic Calendar and Clocks Icons’ (sic) and adds dynamic, updating app icons for the GNOME Calendar and the GNOME Clocks apps. The Calendar app icons updates daily to reflect the day, month, and date, while the Clocks icons convey’s the current time through an easy-to-read analog face. This extension works with both any icons set, including Ubuntu’s Yaru icon set.
