Linux Mint 21.1 Codenamed ‘Vera’, Will Arrive at Xmas

Linux Mint has confirmed we’ll be able to get our hands on the first point-release follow-up to the (well received) Linux Mint 21 release by Christmas. Linux Mint lead Clement Lefebvre also shares the codename for Linux Mint 21.1 is “Vera”. This continues the distro’s tradition of giving each release within a series a female name beginning with the same letter (Linux Mint 21 was ‘Vanessa’, for example). While we don’t know much about plans for Linux Mint 21.1 — though it will continue to be based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, ofc — a less cluttered desktop is in the :sys_more_orange:

NewsFlash 2.0 Released with GTK 4 Port and Support for More RSS Services

RSS fans rejoice for a brand-new version of NewsFlash, a GTK RSS reader for Linux desktops, is out! NewsFlash 2.0 is the biggest update to this nifty news reader for a while. It sees devs finish work on the much-anticipated GTK 4 & libadwaita port. As a result, NewsFlash looks sharper, more refined, and a lot more consistent within itself. The app now boasts an adaptive layout that responds to screen width, letting the app work on mobile. There’s also reworked tagging support in NewsFlash 2.0. This makes it easier than ever to tag articles you read with a new, :sys_more_orange:

Eager to Try Pop!_OS 22.10? Well, You Can’t…

Don’t hate me but I’ve some bad (if not entirely unsurprising) news for the Pop!_OS fans who plan to pounce on the presumed-to-be upcoming 22.10 release: you can’t. Before anyone groan: no, I’m not about to deliver a trite “…cOz vAnILLa ‘bUnTu is beTtEr” punchline. Sadly, Pop!_OS 22.10 is not going to be released this autumn — heck, it’s not even in development. System76’s software engineers want to take the time and effort prepping the next release would take and instead plough it in constructing their home-grown, Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. System76’s Micheal Murphy confirmed the news in a Reddit :sys_more_orange:

Audacity 3.2 Released with Realtime Effects, VST3 Support

Podcasters, musicians, and amateur video makers like me will be pleased to know that a new version of open source audio editor Audacity is now available to download. Audacity 3.2 serves as the latest stable release of this capable digital audio workstation, which is available for Linux, macOS, and Windows alike. But what’s changed since last year’s Audacity 3.1 release? Let’s take a quick look. Audacity 3.2 Features The “headline” feature in Audacity 3.2 is support for realtime effects. This is a huge new feature that enables a whole new host of capabilities for this referred multi-track audio editor and :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10’s New Wallpaper is an Absolute Knock-Out

Ubuntu 22.10’s default wallpaper has been revealed. The new background image will grace the desktop of users who install or upgrade to Ubuntu 22.10 in October. Per tradition, all new versions of Ubuntu come with a custom-designed background image that carries a carefully-rendered character based on the codename mascot, which in this case is an African kudu. But in a break with the past, the mascot depicted in this drape has not been drawn using rigid geometry or bisecting circles, as previous ones have (to get effect, I should add). Instead, the leaping Kudu in the new wallpaper is a :sys_more_orange:

GNOME 43 Released, This is What’s New

Whether you’re an eager GNOME acolyte or just a casual admirer, there is a lot to enjoy in the latest version of the GNOME desktop environment. GNOME 43 arrives six months after the (rather) substantial GNOME 42 release. In many respects it’s a direction continuation of the path set out there, and contains confident collection of changes, some small, some big, but all intended to make it easier to use GNOME. I whip through the core user-facing changes in this post, share a few screenshots, and give a few of my thoughts on some of the chances based on first-hand experience of :sys_more_orange:

SuperTuxKart 1.4 Revs Up for Release with Improved Tracks, Karts, and Mascots

I don’t cover gaming much on this site as a) I’m more of a console kid, and b) my buddy Liam aces it over on gamingonlinux.com, but I do make the odd exception — like whenever a new version of SuperTuxKart rolls up to the starting line. Yep, that revving you hear is the sound of a new release candidate. The last few releases of SuperTuxKart have spoiled us in terms of new karts, characters, tracks, features, game modes etc, and upcoming SuperTuxKart 1.4 release is no different. A stack of visual changes are included. Collectable items are said to :sys_more_orange:

That ‘Unofficial’ Snap Store Could Become More Official

If you read my post about the ‘unofficial’ Snap Store for Ubuntu (and why I think it’s better than the actual Snap Store for Ubuntu) I’ve got an interesting update. Switching to the preview/edge channel for the official Ubuntu Snap Store — Snap Store is the GNOME Software fork Ubuntu ships with, with the Flatpak goodness stripped out and Snap stuff bolted on — now installs the unofficial without-a-name Flutter-based store. It seems the unofficial Snap Store is set to become the official Snap Store! Is that surprising? As noted on Reddit, the community-based, Flutter-built, PackageKit-leveraging Snap Store looks, feels, :sys_more_orange:

4 New Effects Added to ‘Burn My Windows’ Extension

Despite the name, the Burn My Windows GNOME extension offers a grab-bag of different animated effects for opening and closing windows. Alongside the name-sake flame inferno effect beloved of the Compiz Fusion years are an assortment of other animations, spanning the gamut from superfluous science-fiction inspired ones through to more mystical looking disintegrations. Well, now we have even more choice as four brand new effects have been added in the latest version of this brilliant bling bolt-on, rolling out as an update through the GNOME Extensions website. The four new effects include Doom, which is said to be ‘inspired by :sys_more_orange:

Evolution Email Client Now Uses a Headerbar/CSD

The Evolution email client now uses client-side decoration. I checked in with the latest development builds of Evolution ahead of the GNOME 43 release just to make sure I wasn’t missing anything major and …Saw I was missing something major: the introduction of header-bars! Fans of the Evolution groupware suite will be able to enjoy the updated header-bar UI in the next stable release, Evolution 3.46, which is due to ship alongside GNOME 43 later this month (September). It will also be available to install on Ubuntu 22.10, for those wondering. In fact, dev builds are now in the dailies! :sys_more_orange:
