‘Folder Color’ Tool Add Support for Ubuntu 22.10

You’re probably already familiar with Folder Color, a terrifically nifty tool that makes it easy to change the colour of folder icons in Nautilus. Well, I’ve some good news: it recently added support for Ubuntu 22.10 and GNOME 43. This means you can continue to change the colour of any folder in Nautilus, as well as badge folders with a selection of emblems. If you’ve used the tool in earlier versions of Ubuntu and Nautilus nothing has changed: right-click on any folder in the file manager and page into the ‘folder color’ menu, and pick a hue from the list :sys_more_orange:

‘Search Light’ Brings GNOME Shell Search to the Desktop, macOS-Style

Looking for a desktop-based app launcher for GNOME Shell? Check out Search Light, whose developer describes it as “…a Gnome Shell extension that takes the apps search widget out of Overview. Like the macOS spotlight, or Alfred.” Linux users may be more familiar with the idea via open-source software like ULauncher, Albert, Kupfer and, back in the day, GNOME Do. Now, Search Light itself doesn’t surface result the regular GNOME Shell search can’t. It’s essentially the same widget, just floating above all windows. To control what kind of results you see for queries toggle on/off options listed in the system :sys_more_orange:

New Extension Adds Notifications, Media Controls & Media Streams to GNOME Quick Settings

A new GNOME extension allows you to tweak the layout, appearance, and functionality of the new Quick Settings menu in GNOME 43. I wrote about a similar-ish GNOME extension last week that let you remove buttons from showing up in Quick Settings. The author of that extension is back with a new add-on that can that too plus a whole lot more. The ‘Quick Settings Tweaker’ extension installed on Ubuntu 22.10 (or another distro that uses GNOME 43) lets you: Show notifications in Quick Settings menu Show media controller in Quick Settings menu Show per-app audio stream volume sliders Choose :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 23.04 Codename Revealed

The codename for next year’s Ubuntu 23.04 release has been revealed. According to Launchpad, home of Ubuntu development, and a cryptic tweet from the official Ubuntu account it appears that Ubuntu 23.04 is dubbed “Lunar Lobster”. This is a lively combination with which to liken the next interim release of the much-loved desktop Linux distribution, but what does it mean? ‘Lunar Lobster’ – might the next release have a pinch of moon magic? ‘Lunar‘ is an adjective meaning to be of, resemble, or otherwise determined by the moon (and I shouldn’t have to explain what the moon is). A ‘lobster‘ :sys_more_orange:

How to Fix Blurry Firefox under Wayland on Ubuntu

The 2K screen on my “main” Ubuntu laptop is pin sharp but, alas, Mozilla Firefox is not! Now, I’m not saying the browser looks awful. It’s perfectly usable, and I reckon a fair number of people would struggle to see any issue at all. But I do. Fonts within the UI and within the web content are slightly blurry, and window controls, buttons, and other icons rendered don’t appear as crisp or pixel-perfect as the rest of the GNOME desktop I’ve no idea how “widespread” this issue is as, honestly, blurry fonts in a browser on Linux could be caused :sys_more_orange:
