Firefox 101 Released with Only Minor Changes

With celebrations for its centenary release done and dusted it’s back to basics for the Firefox development team. Releasing today is Mozilla Firefox 101, a stable release update packing a couple of minor new features but a boatload of bug and security fixes. First up, Firefox 101 supports the prefers-contrast media query. This allows web site to discern when the user requests web content to be presented with a higher (or lower) contrast than default. Ground breaking it isn’t, but welcome it sure is. You (probably don’t but) may remember Firefox 98 streamlined the download process by no longer nagging you what :sys_more_orange:

Canonical Details Plans to Make the Firefox Snap, Snappier

I think most of us can agree that the Firefox Snap included in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS doesn’t start up nearly as fast as it could (or arguably should). Now, Canonical wants us to know that — and it wants us know that it’s doing something to fix it. Canonical’s Oliver Smith runs through the current causes of slow cold startup times in a blog post, and details some of the steps its engineers are taking to improve the situation. Oliver also spends a bit of time setting out the stall for why Firefox is now a Snap app in Ubuntu, :sys_more_orange:

Plex’s New Linux App is Available as a Snap

Plex fans may be interested to hear an official Plex desktop app for Linux is now available to install from the Snap Store. Plex shared the news of its desktop app update in a blog post today, writing “…as of today Plex HTPC goes live as the true spiritual successor to [Plex Media Player] TV mode,” the media streaming service’s much-loved but aged desktop app. The Plex Desktop app is already available on macOS and Windows, so this is the first time it has been widely available on Linux desktops. The Plex team says it is ‘actively working on Flatpak builds :sys_more_orange:

Meet Paper, a New GTK Note Taking App for Linux

If you’re seeking out a note taking app for Linux you’ll want to check out Paper. Paper is a modern GTK app that pitches itself as a ‘pretty note-taking app for GNOME’ — it is! Being based around Markdown also means this app can do everything essential when writing notes, such as text formatting, adding links, highlighting sections of text, inserting code blocks, and more. Now, I class myself as more of a casual note taker. I use apps like this to squirrel away ideas I have for future posts, commands I ought to remember, and …Well, lists of He-Man :sys_more_orange:

This GNOME Extension Measures How Long an App Takes to Open

Ever wondered how long your favourite apps take to open? Hey, maybe you’re keen to measure Snap app startup times to see if they’re as notoriously un-nimble as claimed. Similarly, maybe you want to see if any of the ‘speed improvements’ Canonical tout (of which there have been many over the years) actually have a tangible effect on your system versus their chosen benchmarks. If so Ubuntu developer Marco ‘3v1n0‘ Trevisan is on hand to help. He’s created an ‘Applications Startup Time Measure’ extension for GNOME Shell. This does exactly what it suggests: it tells you how long an app :sys_more_orange:

Productive Summer Planned for Pitivi Video Editor

Any list of Linux video editors would be incomplete if it didn’t include Pitivi. I have a real soft spot for this oft-overlooked GTK & GStreamer based non-linear video editor. It’s inherently stable, has a clean, ordered UI, and diligently focuses on ensuring the ‘basics’ of video editing (cutting, arranging, simple effects, simple transitions, etc) are catered for. As it’s GTK-based means Pitivi looks right at home on GNOME-based desktops. But soon it will look even nicer as a GTK4 port of Pitivi is getting underway as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code. Under the guidance of GNOME :sys_more_orange:

Linux Kernel 5.18 Released, This is What’s New

Ahoy, a brand new Linux kernel release is now available to download. Linus Torvalds, creator of Linux, announced the release of Linux 5.18 in a short email to the Linux Kernel Mailing List, writing: “No unexpected nasty surprises this last week, so here we go with the 5.18 release right on schedule”. So what’s new? Among the headline changes is the (somewhat) controversial inclusion of Intel Software Defined Silicon (SDSi) driver to the mainline kernel. This driver (to cut a long story short) restricts access to certain processor features if a certificate from Intel isn’t present. Some fear SDSi will :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10 Makes PipeWire Default

PipeWire is the default audio server in Ubuntu 22.10. The latest daily builds of the development release (which is codenamed ‘Kinetic Kudu’) ship with Pipewire in place of Pulseaudio out of the box, no workarounds required. The last time Ubuntu made made a major change to its audio stack was (fittingly) in the last ‘K’-named release, Ubuntu 9.10 ‘Karmic Koala’. Ubuntu trails its distro rivals in adopting this next-gen sound server tech. The roots of PipeWire go back to 2015. The tech was initially conceived as a “PulseAudio for video”, but was later expanded to include audio streams. Fedora adopted :sys_more_orange:

HP Team Up With System76 for New Linux Laptop

HP is launching a Linux laptop pre-loaded with Pop!_OS, the Ubuntu-based distro created by System76. The collaboration, which was quietly revealed by System76 CEO Carl Richell on Twitter, is a pretty major one. It is the first time System76 has partnered with another computer company to ship their OS. It’s also the first time (to my knowledge) that a HP Linux laptop will ship with something other than vanilla Ubuntu. Specs for the 14-inch HP Dev One seem pretty sweet, too. Inkscape 1.2 is Now Available to Download

A major update to open source drawing app Inkscape is now available to download for Linux, Windows, and macOS. Inkscape 1.2 is packed with a variety of new features that designers, artists, and other illustrative innovators are sure to love. Plus, this update features a swathe of stability improvements, performance enhancements, and bug fixes. For many the headline addition in Inkscape 1.2 is support for multiple page documents. A long-standing request from the client’s enthusiastic fanbase, it’s now possible to create standard or custom-size pages within the same document. There’s a brand-new page tool to make managing these multi-doc docs easy. :sys_more_orange:

Scrivano is a New App to Take Handwritten Notes on Linux

If I asked you to name a handwritten note-taking app for Linux chases are you’d namecheck Xournal++. It’s arguably the best one out there as it’s open source, well featured, and a real best-in-class application. But there’s always room for more. Scrivano is a relatively new hand-written note taking app for Linux (and Windows) that could prove itself handy for anyone looking to jot down hand-written notes, draw simple charts and diagrams, mark-up images, and other similarly nimble tasks. The app features four different paper backgrounds: Plain, Lined, Grid, or Dotted. The space between the lines/dots/grid spaces are all configurable :sys_more_orange:

NVIDIA Unexpectedly Announces Open-Source GPU Kernel Modules

Anyone heading to hell this evening may want to pack some warmer clothes: NVIDIA is finally embracing open source whole-heartedly. In a shock post, NVIDIA announced the immediate release of open source GPU kernel modules for a crop of its current hardware. The move is the first step in a broader open source push by company aimed at “improving the experience of using NVIDIA GPUs in Linux”. And about time too, right? NVIDIA add that Canonical, backers of Ubuntu, plan to ‘package the open kernel modules’ for use in the recent Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release in short order, with other :sys_more_orange:

How to Disable UI Animations in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

For a quick and effective way to make Ubuntu feel instantly faster you can disable UI animations. In fact, turning animations off in Ubuntu is a guaranteed way to get the best performance from the system on older and lower spec’d computers. Many desktop effects, while pretty, require beefier system resources to run. Desktop animations in Ubuntu —heck, any major end-user OS serve a purpose. They can often be over the top but they’re not entirely pointless. They help make the desktop feel more fluid and graceful in use. But this can come at a cost: speed — though more :sys_more_orange:

Neat: ‘deb-get’ is like apt-get, but for 3rd Party Ubuntu Apps

Most of us are intimately familiar with how great apt is for installing software on Ubuntu using the command line. But chances are there are apps you wish you could apt install, but you can’t. Google Chrome is my main one (hey, I like it, let me be). Every time I do a fresh install of Ubuntu or a derivative Pop!_OS or Linux Mint, I have to go out of my way to go get it. Now, it’s easy to install Google Chrome on Ubuntu: go to the Chrome website, download the latest .deb installer, then sudo dpkg -i install :sys_more_orange:
