Pitivi Video Editor Adds Beat Detection, Object Tracking + More
A new development version of Pitivi video editor is out and it boasts some major new features. The GTK-based video editor is currently in the midst of a GTK4 port as part of this year’s Google Summer of Code but, happening alongside that work, is work on adding a slew of other features that would-be content creators will be keen to try. Following OpenShot’s lead, the Pitivi 2022.06 milestone introduces object tracking. I had a bit of a play with this prior to writing this article. To track and object you click “cover object” in the clip options panel then

Firefox 102 Adds GeoClue Support on Linux, Improves PDF Viewer
A new version of Mozilla Firefox is available to download, ahead of its form release on June 28. Mozilla Firefox 102 sees the browser bake-in support for GeoClue on Linux desktops, improve PDF appearance when using high contrast mode, and gain the ability display subtitles and captions in the Picture-in-Picture window when playing content from HBO Max, DailyMotion, Funimation, and a number of other video streaming sites. Among a clutch of Linux-specific bug fixes is a patch to resolve issues with Amazon password length appearance, plus work to reduce PDF rendering artefacts, and video distortion with H.264 when using VAAPI.

Nautilus Gains New List View with Rubber Banding, Animations + More
Nautilus gained an improved list view this weekend, as code implementing GtkColumnView was merged in to the latest development builds of the file manager. Switching from GtkTreeView (which remains available in GTK4) to the new version is said to offer a number of advantages and offer ‘full feature parity’ with two (temporary) exceptions (these being worked on in separate branches). So what are the benefits? Well, say hello to rubber banding — at long last you can now select multiple files/folders in list view simply by dragging out with your mouse, just like you can in the icon view: There’s

This Extension Makes Accessing GNOME Shell’s Advanced Settings Easier
Are there parts of the GNOME Shell UI you wish you could configure and customise? If so, check out the Shell Configurator GNOME extension, recently updated to support GNOME 42. This free, open source add-on makes it incredibly easy to access GNOME Shell’s advanced backend settings without needing to use the command line or a tool like dconf-editor. Clapper GTK Video App Bags Performance Boost in Latest Update
An improved version of the (very sleek) Clapper video player is available to download. I’ve written about this GStreamer-based GTK media player before, but it was a while ago and I haven’t mentioned it since. It’s actually added quite a few new features since then, including experimental and entirely opt-in Pipewire support. The latest version of Clapper, version 0.5, introduces a ‘new and improved GSrreamer video sink’. This switch introduces performance improvements and lays groundwork for future performance in the future, and handles overlay of subtitles. If Clapper’s old sink worked well for you (and you find the new one

Chertan is a Cool Circular Conky Theme for Linux
Conky is a great way to personalise your Linux desktop regardless of which distro or DE you’re using. There are hundreds if not thousands of Conky themes available, ranging from simple stat tables to Lua-laden masterpieces. I recently came across a new Conky config I like. It shows the date, current weather conditions, an average CPU and RAM load, and the currently playing song in MPD. I figured I’d share the theme on here and add a bit info on how to customise this Conky to work with your location and any MPRIS-compatible music player, rather than MPD. It requires

How to Fix ‘apt-key’ Deprecation Warning on Ubuntu
If you see an apt-key deprecated warning when you run apt update on Ubuntu and want to fix it, you’re in the right place In this post I walk you (and myself) through the process. See, after I followed the steps to install TeamViewer on Ubuntu I noticed the following error every time I run apt update: W: https://linux.teamviewer.com/deb/dists/stable/InRelease: Key is stored in legacy trusted.gpg keyring (/etc/apt/trusted.gpg), see the DEPRECATION section in apt-key(8) for details. Though undesired, the warning does not prevent updating or upgrading the system. You can ignore it without any ill effect and, for a day or :sys_more_orange:

How to Install TeamViewer on Ubuntu & Linux Mint
TeamViewer is an application that lets you access other computers remotely so you can modify, maintain, or manage them wherever you are, as though you were actually there. Better yet, the app works with all major platforms: Windows, macOS, and Linux (also in limited forms on iOS and Android too). You can use TeamViewer to transfer files to/from a remote computer and host; chat in real time with its users; sync clipboard contents, and more. TeamViewer is also simple to use: you install the app on both computers, then connect using the unique ID and password the app generates. While

GNOME Devs Mockup a Modern Image Viewer with Editing Tools
Back in 2019 I opined that Ubuntu needs a better image viewer than the one it currently offers (which is Eye of GNOME, if you didn’t know, a core GNOME app). Alas, that hasn’t happened yet. Ubuntu still uses an image viewer that doesn’t offer all of the features that rival operating systems do (yes, even the ChromeOS image viewer can do more out-of-the-box). But hope is on the horizon. GNOME design guru Allan Day has revised his mockups for an improved GNOME image handling experience. Before we look at why his proposals have a dork like me excited, I

Amberol GTK Music App Gains New Features, Reduces Memory Usage
I’m a big fan of Emmanuele Bassi’s Amberol music player and the latest version, released this weekend adds a couple of pretty big new features. Before I get to those, I will point out that this GTK-based music music player has been updated numerous times since I spotlighted it back in April. UI improvements, including relocating the playlist to the left-hand side of the window, have been implemented; there’s now an option to disable UI recolouring; and comprehensive MPRIS support. Amberol 0.8 is the latest release and it lets you search for songs in the playlist/queue. You don’t need to

TIL You Can Increase Vivaldi UI Size (Because Of Course You Can; It’s Vivaldi)
When I posted an article on the recent Vivaldi update — the built-in Vivaldi Mail client is now stable, in-case you missed it — I casually mentioned that my only real “gripe” with using Vivaldi on Ubuntu is that the UI looks too small on my display. Now, this problem isn’t exclusive to Vivaldi. I find most Chromium-based web browsers are a bit on the teensy side. Sure, I could enable fractional scaling in the Settings app to try and offset the issue but since the rest of my UI is fine as-is, I’d rather not. Vivaldi is not obnoxiously

Using a Tablet as a Second Monitor in Ubuntu is Actually Pretty Easy
Today I learn that it’s pretty easy to use an iPad or an Android tablet as a second monitor with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Not just “access your desktop” but “use it to extend your desktop” as though it were a regular, physically connected external monitor. I know: I’m supposed to be on the pulse of stuff like this and yet, here I am, monsieur slow-train, only learning about this capability cos it got mentioned it in a Reddit thread that, mercifully, passed before my eyes. Naturally I had to dive it to try it out first hand. I’ve wanted something
