GNOME Devs Mockup a Modern Image Viewer with Editing Tools
Back in 2019 I opined that Ubuntu needs a better image viewer than the one it currently offers (which is Eye of GNOME, if you didn’t know, a core GNOME app). Alas, that hasn’t happened yet. Ubuntu still uses an image viewer that doesn’t offer all of the features that rival operating systems do (yes, even the ChromeOS image viewer can do more out-of-the-box). But hope is on the horizon. GNOME design guru Allan Day has revised his mockups for an improved GNOME image handling experience. Before we look at why his proposals have a dork like me excited, I

Amberol GTK Music App Gains New Features, Reduces Memory Usage
I’m a big fan of Emmanuele Bassi’s Amberol music player and the latest version, released this weekend adds a couple of pretty big new features. Before I get to those, I will point out that this GTK-based music music player has been updated numerous times since I spotlighted it back in April. UI improvements, including relocating the playlist to the left-hand side of the window, have been implemented; there’s now an option to disable UI recolouring; and comprehensive MPRIS support. Amberol 0.8 is the latest release and it lets you search for songs in the playlist/queue. You don’t need to

TIL You Can Increase Vivaldi UI Size (Because Of Course You Can; It’s Vivaldi)
When I posted an article on the recent Vivaldi update — the built-in Vivaldi Mail client is now stable, in-case you missed it — I casually mentioned that my only real “gripe” with using Vivaldi on Ubuntu is that the UI looks too small on my display. Now, this problem isn’t exclusive to Vivaldi. I find most Chromium-based web browsers are a bit on the teensy side. Sure, I could enable fractional scaling in the Settings app to try and offset the issue but since the rest of my UI is fine as-is, I’d rather not. Vivaldi is not obnoxiously

Using a Tablet as a Second Monitor in Ubuntu is Actually Pretty Easy
Today I learn that it’s pretty easy to use an iPad or an Android tablet as a second monitor with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Not just “access your desktop” but “use it to extend your desktop” as though it were a regular, physically connected external monitor. I know: I’m supposed to be on the pulse of stuff like this and yet, here I am, monsieur slow-train, only learning about this capability cos it got mentioned it in a Reddit thread that, mercifully, passed before my eyes. Naturally I had to dive it to try it out first hand. I’ve wanted something

Plex’s New Linux Apps Now Available on Flathub
A small (SEO-unfriendly) post to mention that the new Plex Desktop app for Linux is now available on Flathub. The proprietary Plex Desktop and Plex HTPC apps made their Linux debut on Canonical’s Snap Store a few weeks back. At the time the media-streaming company said that Flatpak builds would follow in the future. Well, the future has only gone and blinkin’ arrived! Yes, Plex’s new Linux apps are now available to install from Flathub. This makes it super-duper simple to get both the new desktop client and its big-screen-friendly sibling up and running on your distro of choice, be

A Memory Quirk in Ubuntu 22.04 is Killing Apps too Frequently
If you’ve found memory management in Ubuntu a little too aggressive since upgrading to 22.04 LTS know this: you are not alone. A new discussion on the Ubuntu mailing list highlights issues scores of users are experiencing on the system. It all links back to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS’s introduction of systemd-oomd, a user-space out of memory killer that’s designed to “take corrective action before an OOM occurs in the kernel space’. When it detects that memory pressure is getting a bit too stressed, it intervenes to ensure the system copes, and (most) things stay running. Problem is, some folks are

Regolith Desktop 2.0 is Out with Various Changes
A brand new version of the Regolith desktop is now available. Regolith desktop 2.0 aims to meet the needs of those who seek a fast and efficient desktop Linux experience controlled (primarily) from the keyboard. Regolith pairs the i3 tiling window manager with GNOME Flashback, and adds in an assortment of other open-source components to deliver a curated, keyboard-driven UX. And are some big changes since the Regolith 1.6 release from last summer. For one, devs have replaced the rofi “launcher” with a new “desktop executor designed specifically for Regolith” called ilia. EverSticky: Sticky Notes App for Linux that Syncs to Evernote
When it comes to sticky note apps for Linux it’s fair to say we’re spoilt for choice – heck knows I’ve tried most of the ones out there! EverSticky is another open-source sticky notes app for Linux but it has a major difference: it syncs to Evernote, the hugely-popular note taking and task management service. Existing Evernote users will find this a compelling USP as, with minimal effort, it’s easy to take notes and keep them in sync across multiple devices. EverSticky is a Qt-based app created by developer Joey Miller. But it’s fully compatible with most modern Linux desktops
