Canonical is ‘Sunsetting’ Bazaar on Launchpad

To old-timers like me Launchpad, the Canonical-run development hub, is synonymous with Bazaar (bzr), the open-source distribution version control system (VCS) Canonical helped develop. Like GitHub, Launchpad lets anyone sign up and create a repo, then connect from the command-line to push code to it, handle merges, branch, fork, etc. Using ‘recipes’, code in bzr repos can be turned into DEBs, PPAs and Snaps. But the future of Bzr is at crossroads. Canonical plans to ‘sunset’ Bazaar from Launchpad this year: It’s not 100% clear if Canonical will stop relying on Bazaar internally for Ubuntu’s development (given how interconnected the :sys_more_orange:

Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9.4 Released with Various Changes

A new version of the Raspberry Pi Imager, a free, open source and cross-platform image writing utility (think Etcher, but much redder) is out with an array of modest improvements. Serving as the first release since last September, Raspberry Pi Imager 1.9.4 adds to the big UI changes the previous version brought with some quality-of-life adjustments. For instance, in the OS customisation settings there’s an Enable SSH tab. This now uses “regex to perform some light validation” of public keys to avoid boot failures, having previously just assumed any key entered was correct. Raspberry Pi Imager 9.4 includes an ‘Exclude :sys_more_orange:

elementary OS 8 Updates Add New Dock Features + More

The team behind elementary OS recently detailed a number of improvements to recently roll out to users of the distro. Gala, the default window manager used by the Pantheon desktop environment, is described as seeing an “absolutely massive release” fixing scores of issues and plumbing in a new Gesture Controller offering tangible improvements to the way gestures work. Precisely how? Hey: I ain’t the developer! But reading the pull request which adds the changes it sounds like the new Gesture Controller ought to deliver smoother interactions, hard to convey in words, but things like properly calculated deceleration, handling of gesture cancellation and :sys_more_orange:

Linux App Release Roundup: May 2025

May saw another sizeable set of Linux app updates, including a big update to system monitor tool Mission Centre and long-awaited version bump to system cleaner BleachBit. We also got new versions of web browsers Mozilla Firefox and Vivaldi; the NordVPN Linux app gained a GUI; and more — but they weren’t the only releases of note. That’s why I do these Linux app release roundups: I like to highlight app updates that didn’t warrant a headline of their own, but are still worth knowing about. As always, if you hear about a notable app update I haven’t covered, tips :sys_more_orange:

After 25 Years, Linux Format Magazine is No More

In May 2000, the first issue of a brand new Linux magazine hit British newsstands, delivering a monthly mix of news, reviews, interviews, tutorials and learned insight on all things free and open-source — plus that all-important cover-mounted CD/DVD! Now, 25 years later, the final ever issue has gone on sale. Linux Format, a monthly magazine covering Linux and open-source, .  Future Plc, the UK-based publisher of Linux Format, hasn’t said why the magazine is closing, but one doesn’t need an Oracular Oriole to divine the reason: print publishing is struggling to survive. The writing is less on the pages :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Fixes Vanishing ‘Install’ Button Issue in Software Updater

Name: The install button in Software Updater (nee Update Manager). Age: Er, however long it’s been since 2005, when Ubuntu added a GUI software updater. Appearance: Invisible when you need it most! So this bug… If you unchecked every package listed in Software Updater, the Install Now button vanishes completely… Doesn’t sound like a bug… No, because I haven’t finished. If you then re-select any package (because you want to install it), the Install Now button does not reappear, meaning you can’t. You have to restart Software Updater to get it to show up. Perhaps it was upset? I mean, the install button does :sys_more_orange:

Mozilla Firefox 139 Brings Custom New Tab Wallpapers

The new Mozilla Firefox 139 release is rolling out from today and, compared to recent releases of late, it’s far lighter on user-facing changes. Not that every release can, of course. We have been spoiled: Firefox 136 came with vertical tabs, Firefox 137 brought tab grouping and revamped address bar, while last month’s Firefox 138 release debuted a proper profile manager/switcher. By comparison, the headline change in Firefox 139, per its release notes, is full-page translations on extension pages (but only if they start with the moz-extension:// URL scheme). Mozilla say this delivers a “popular request” from users. Elsewhere, Firefox 139 :sys_more_orange:

Mozilla Kills Pocket so it can Focus on Firefox

Mozilla is shutting down Pocket, the “read it later” service it acquired in 2017 and integrated into the Firefox web browser. Pocket shuts down on July 8, but existing users and paying subscribers will be able to export saved stories until October 8, 2025. After that, finito. “Pocket has helped millions save articles and discover stories worth reading. But the way people save and consume content on the web has evolved, so we’re channeling our resources into projects that better match browsing habits today,” they say. Why kill it? The driver, they say, was so it could “…focus our efforts :sys_more_orange:
