Ubuntu 24.04 Beta Delayed Due to Security Issue

If you were hoping to help test the upcoming release of Ubuntu 24.04 by way of the official beta that was due for release this week, I’ve some bad news: it’s been delayed. However, I think you may have been expecting this. Ubuntu 24.04 beta was scheduled for release on April 4, giving developers, testers, and enthusiasts plenty of time to try out the newest features, find and report issues, check compatibility with real-world hardware, and all of that useful stuff. But owing to a recent security issue — a backdoor was uncovered in recent versions of xz compression library :sys_more_orange:

@omgubuntu Ubuntu is DEAD to me. Too much "snaps" and too much "ransomware"-like behavior ( pay me for protection, with money or personal data ) NO THANKS! NO MORE #UBUNTU

@Axel1973 @omgubuntu "Ransomware"?! Seriously? It's extra security updates that users were not getting before. More developer time spent on it. Do you think everyone at Canonical works for free, and lives on the streets or something?

@popey @omgubuntu stop wining. Canonical is NOT the only #Linux distro out there who offer FREE packages AND FREE updates. To me it seems like "ransom" if someone offers me packages (for free) and later artificially "holds back" available updates. mentioning "pay extra". PLUS forcing snaps on my Systems without asking is similar fucked up. So no thanks #CANONICAL #UBUNTU ! As an enterprise admin i will make sure that we won't deploy those anymore. Go make some extra money from that!

@Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu U're totally living in your own fictional world dude. Real world doesn't work like that. It just can't.
Doing most of those cosume time and resources. And they gotta find a way to pay those expenses. And to their credit it's not like they ask you to pay for everything. They don't even force you to buy them. The option is there.

@Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu And also about snaps. Snaps are just another packaging format like deb or rpm
You don't have a problem with debian forcing you to use deb instead of rpm do u?

And it's not like you can't get rid of snaps If you want to on ubuntu. It's not that complex.

@tnds @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu That is not exactly true. Snap store is centralized and proprietary making the whole ecosystem very un-OSS. Another packaging system is fine, slow move of control from community to corporates is not

@mana_z @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu well proprietary software isn't new is it. It has been there way before snap store. Heck even most of software stores and distro repos have an option to enable them. So what's the difference?

@mana_z @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu Yes. Foss is better but not every developer likes to make their software that way. Unless proprietary software gets prohibited in linux(which I don't think will ever happen for obvious reasons), proprietary software will exsit.

@tnds @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu that a company which claims to be so open-source-oriented is shifting stuff to be less and less open-source. I don't mind proprietary software in principle, but I do mind if I can only have software from a single proprietary vendor. If they would provide capabilities to run an independent snap store, I wouldn't have any problem with snap at all. I don't really like snap's design, but that's a different topic.

@mana_z @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu well honestly I think that is true. tbh even though I might look like I am someone who likes snaps. I don't, I mainly prefer native packages. And If I had to choose between snap or flatpak it's probably flatpak.

@mana_z @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu And it's not like we are forced to use snap store. I mean yeah it's there by default but if someone doesn't like that they can remove snap-store snaps and replace them with what they like. That's the beauty of linux isn't it?

@tnds @Axel1973 @popey @omgubuntu one of the beauties of Linux is also there are plenty of distros as well, so why pick an Ubuntu when one would just start removing stuff what makes it Ubuntu, right...

@tnds @mana_z @omgubuntu thats for personal taste. i prefer stability and a broad spread popularity for a base, so "solutions" can be found more easily "in time". However didn't you mention flatpaks somewhere? thats something really nice for more up to date desktop apps. i enjoy that a lot! Since they are a free choice to use them, not mandatory enforced with a crowbar to the face. cheers fellow Linuxer :D

@Axel1973 @mana_z @omgubuntu That's true I guess. But as I said for me I prefer native ones so yeah It's not gonna work for me. But obviously that won't be a problem for everyone.

@Axel1973 @omgubuntu You do realise those security updates you're getting from Linux Mint, predominantly come from Canonical/Ubuntu? :D

Anyway, I'm glad you have found a #Linux distribution that makes you happy! Enjoy!
