KDE Connect is Now Available on Windows

KDE Connect is one of the best ways to integrate your Android smartphone with your Linux desktop. Now the tech is available for Windows users too. A beta build of KDE Connect for Windows is available for testing, though it’s only accessible through a special link to the Microsoft Store app listing page at present. This means you can’t open the Microsoft Store, search “KDE Connect” and install it that way. KDE Connect joins a swathe of KDE software on the Microsoft Store, where faves like painting app Krita, NLE Kdenlive, and text editor Kate are already available — and :sys_more_orange:

Valve’s Steam Deck is 7-inch Handheld Linux Gaming PC

Today Valve announced the Steam Deck, a handheld Linux gaming PC that’s loaded with a custom-built AMD chip for top-tier AAA gaming action. And it looks pretty frickin’ special! Companies like GPD, oDroid, and Nintendo have proven there’s a viable market for powerful handheld gaming. And Valve, makers of Steam, were clearly paying attention. Their Steam Deck specs boasts a 7-inch touchscreen (1280×800), 16 GB of DDR5 RAM; up to 512 GB NVMe internal storage; plus a custom designed AMD APU Valve say is “…optimized for handheld gaming. How optimised? Valve say: “it is a Zen 2 + RDNA 2 :sys_more_orange:

Pine64’s Open Source Smartwatch Goes on Sale for $27

If you’ve been counting down the hours until you could wear something open source on your wrist, then the time is at hand! You can now buy the PineTime smartwatch pre-flashed with the InfiniTime firmware. Since announcing the PineTime back in 2019 both Pine64 and its dedicated developer community have beavered away on making a viable, functional open source smartwatch that non-developers might want to use. Although the PineTime is designed, partly, to compliment Linux smartphones like the PinePhone, it’s totally open should people want to create apps that let the watch talk to iOS and Android devices (some are :sys_more_orange:

ArcMenu GNOME Extension Adds New Windows 11 Layout

A new version of the ArcMenu GNOME extension is available for download, and it’ll be of particular interest to those who want to make Ubuntu look like Windows 11. The latest update to Arc Menu includes a pair of new menu layouts: ‘Launcher’ and ‘Eleven’. The latter of these is modelled on the redesigned ‘Start Menu’ set to ship in Windows 11 when released later this year. A smattering of changes to preexisting layouts also ship in this update, including new names for the Unity-inspired ‘Dash’ and ‘KRunner’ options, plus some tweaks to the Windows layout to toggle Frequent Apps :sys_more_orange:

“Every Preference Has a Cost” — Why GNOME Does What it Does

GNOME’s Tobias Bernard has a new blog post out and it’s an essential read if you’re interested in the direction of the GNOME desktop. Now, it’s always great to get some background rationale from the folks inside of the project and the way they think. It helps to fill in the blanks of why GNOME does what GNOME does which, regardless of whether you agree with specific points, is a healthy thing to know. As an end ‘user’ of the GNOME desktop it is easy to feel like changes and diktats arrive out of nowhere, with no real rhyme or :sys_more_orange:

Firefox 90 Available to Download, This is What’s New

Mozilla Firefox 90 is now available to download for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Since last month’s Firefox 89 release was a substantial one you won’t be surprised to know Firefox 90 is a more modest affair. The biggest feature addition is background updating for Windows users (it allows the browser to be updated even when it’s not running). The new, if not-universally-loved ‘Proton’ redesign remains almost identical to the last version. Mozilla’s dev task force don’t appear to have made any significant changes based on its initial reception. Firefox 90 does not (in the version I tested) remove or retire :sys_more_orange:
