‘Font Downloader’ is a GTK App for Downloading Google Fonts on Linux

Looking for an easy way to search and download fonts from Google Fonts on Ubuntu? Check out Font Downloader, a perfectly formed GTK front-end for the Google Fonts repository. This app makes it easy to browse, search, and filter (e.g., monospace, handwritten, etc) over 1,075 free and open source fonts available on Google Fonts. When you touch upon some typography you’re keen to use, Font Downloader makes it easy to test the font within the app (perfect for seeing it has the character coverage you need) but download (to a folder of your choice) or install it in ‘one-click’. “One :sys_more_orange:

Hurrah, Chrome for Linux FINALLY Supports CSD Properly

The latest development builds of Google Chrome fix several of the browser’s extant CSD issues on Linux desktops. Those of you mouthing “What CSD related issues?!” at your screens (and thus me) probably run Google Chrome maximised on the desktop. However, those of us who run it windowed have had to endure (hyperbole, ofc) Chrome’s cranky client-side decoration support which draws a thick border around the entire window (which is highly noticeable in GTK themes with dark header bars, like Ubuntu’s Yaru), and isn’t able to handle smooth, rounded window corners. You can compare the currently stable version of Google :sys_more_orange:

‘Mousai’ is Song Recognition App for Linux

Next time you want to identify a song you hear in a TV show, movie, or other video give Mousai a go. Mousai by SeaDve is a song recognition app for Linux desktop (and named after the ancient Greek Goddess of song and music). Built in GTK and leveraging the AudD song recognition API, Mousai is basically Shazam for Linux. Open Mousai, hit the ‘listen’ button, play the song you want to identify (ideally in vague proximity to your laptop’s microphone) wait a few seconds, and bam: it tells you the song name and who performs it. The app is :sys_more_orange:

‘Now Clocking’ is a Hybrid Clock/Now Playing Conky for Your Desktop

I’ve been looking for a decent “Now Playing” widget for my Ubuntu desktop for a while now, having been inspired by some Rainmeter version I saw in a thread on Windows desktop. And I finally found one — but it took some searching. Now, I appreciate that the days of showing you currently playing track on your desktop is pretty niche in 2021. And most Linux desktop environments (including GNOME, which Ubuntu uses) support MPRIS controls some form or another. Standalone now playing ‘widgets’ (like the much-missed CoverGloobus, pictured as part of a particularly impressive desktop below) are few and :sys_more_orange:

The ‘Hey Dude, Where Can I Get That Wallpaper?’ Blog Post

If you’ve been lusting after the colourful desktop wallpapers I’ve been using in screenshots for articles and tweets during the past month or so, this post is for you. Quite a few of you have reached out to ask me for a link to a number if the wallpapers I’ve been using, as well as to ask where I get my wallpapers from. Rather than reply individually I figured I’d throw a quick post up here to make it easier for me to reply to everyone, and maybe reach those who did wonder but were too afraid to ask. Nautilus 40 Arrives in Ubuntu 21.10 Daily Builds

Nautilus 40 is winging its way to the Ubuntu 21.10 daily builds. While it’s arrival isn’t the most newsworthy event set to occur this cycle, Nautilus 40 carries a small crop of improvements and features that Impish daily testers will want to have a play about with. Such as? Well, this update to the famed file manager finally lets you sort files by creation date in the list view; is said to relay ‘more accurate’ file transfer and copy estimates; and improves tab completion in the location entry bar (accessed by pressing ctrl + l). Another area of improvements is :sys_more_orange:

The Easy Way to Enable ‘Minimize on Click’ in Ubuntu

In this post you will learn how to enable minimize on click for the Ubuntu Dock in Ubuntu 18.04 LTS and above. But what is “minimize on click”, and why do some Ubuntu users like to enable it? When you click an application icon in the Ubuntu Dock (the bar on the left-hand side of the screen) a few things may happen: The app will open (if not running) The app will get focus (if running but not in focus) Nothing (if the app is running and in focus) The application will restore (if previously minimized) If more than one :sys_more_orange:
