How to Disable UI Animations in Ubuntu 22.04 LTS

For a quick and effective way to make Ubuntu feel instantly faster you can disable UI animations. In fact, turning animations off in Ubuntu is a guaranteed way to get the best performance from the system on older and lower spec’d computers. Many desktop effects, while pretty, require beefier system resources to run. Desktop animations in Ubuntu —heck, any major end-user OS serve a purpose. They can often be over the top but they’re not entirely pointless. They help make the desktop feel more fluid and graceful in use. But this can come at a cost: speed — though more :sys_more_orange:

KDE Connect is Now Available for iPhone & iPad

An official KDE Connect mobile client is now available on the Apple App Store. The addition of this official iOS app means folks with an iPhone and/or iPad can benefit from a deeper set of integration between their mobile devices and their Linux desktop. Features of KDE Connect for iPhone include: Shared clipboard Share files and URLs to your computer from any app. Virtual touchpad Remote presentation remote Run commands on your computer from your phone Sadly the KDE Connect iOS app doesn’t offer 1:1 feature parity with the Android client I’ve used in the past. Neat: ‘deb-get’ is like apt-get, but for 3rd Party Ubuntu Apps

Most of us are intimately familiar with how great apt is for installing software on Ubuntu using the command line. But chances are there are apps you wish you could apt install, but you can’t. Google Chrome is my main one (hey, I like it, let me be). Every time I do a fresh install of Ubuntu or a derivative Pop!_OS or Linux Mint, I have to go out of my way to go get it. Now, it’s easy to install Google Chrome on Ubuntu: go to the Chrome website, download the latest .deb installer, then sudo dpkg -i install :sys_more_orange:

Open Source Video Editor Kdenlive Gains 10-Bit Color Support

If you’re feeling creative this week be sure to check out the latest release of open source video editor Kdenlive. Kdenlive’s development team has announced the release of Kdenlive 22.04. This is a major update that carries more than 300 commits. While its devs say this release is ‘mostly focused on stability and polishing’ there are a couple of new features you’ll want to know about. The biggest ‘new’ feature in Kdenlive 22.04 is support for full range 10-bit colour. This is a pretty huge advancement that will definitely help the non-linear editor find favour with indie filmmakers. The drawback :sys_more_orange:

Pine64 Prepping a Pair of Wireless Ear Buds Powered by Open Source

Could Pine64 emerge as an open source analog to Samsung? With the announcement of yet-another piece of hardware, it seems so! A pair of high-end in-ear wireless headphones called PineBuds are on the horizon. These includes features most would expect in 2022, like ambient and environment noise cancellation, and a lengthy battery life. The earbuds will also be end-user flashable, opening up a world of possible uses. But first things first: as with other products produced by Pine64 the story starts with developers. “The approach we’ll be taking is :sys_more_orange: similar to how we handled the PineTime and the Pinecil. :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10 ‘Kinetic Kudu’ is Open for Development

And we’re off — development is now open for Ubuntu 22.10 “Kinetic Kudu”. “We’re pleased to announce that kinetic is now open for development. auto-sync has been enabled and will run soon”, writes Ubuntu’s Brian Murray in his starting-pistol post to Ubuntu’s main development mailing list. “As usual, we expect a large influx of builds and autopkgtests in this initial period, which will cause delays. Please help fixing any breakage that occurs,” he adds, somewhat ominously! Art this stage in development there isn’t much “new” stuff to mention, much less see. But if you’re into bug hunting then honestly: this :sys_more_orange:

GNOME Devs Help Solve “Barking Laptop” Problem

Today I noticed GNOME 43 is removing its dog bark sound effect. And my first genuine reaction was: “There’s a dog bark sound effect in GNOME?!”. Yup, there is. Open Settings > Sound and scroll to the ‘Alert Sound’ section near the bottom. There, right before your eyes is a sound pound (sorry) with four choices: bark, drip, glass, and sonar (irrelevant trivia: drip is the sound effect I hear regularly in Fedora as it’s what GNOME Terminal plays when it can’t find/auto-complete the command I’m ham-fistedly trying to type). Weirdly, for reasons unknown, an Ubuntu user is being hounded :sys_more_orange:

A Nifty Dynamic Wallpaper Maker for GNOME 42

Ditch the scripts and erase the elaborate terminal commands ‘cos the following GTK4 app makes it super easy to create your own dynamic wallpapers to use in GNOME 42 (and above). Woah, woah: not the old kind of dynamic wallpapers. Awesome though those timed slideshows were/are I’m fully aware apps to create them aren’t new (though weirdly I’ve never written about any 💁🏻‍♂️). Anyway, this is a new Dynamic Wallpaper creator for GNOME 42. To recap: vanilla GNOME 42 comes with a proper standardised dark mode implementation that all modern GNOME apps respect. It’s pretty cool. As part of that :sys_more_orange:

How to Upgrade to Pop!_OS 22.04 LTS

A new version of Pop!_OS is out and it packs some delectable goodies like scheduled updates, better multi-monitor workspace switching, and a tweak that ensures the app or game in focus gets the best performance possible. But you don’t need to download a new .iso and plunge headfirst into a fresh install. You can upgrade to Pop OS 22.04 from 21.10. And in this post I walk you (well, me) through the process… Upgrading to Pop!_OS 22.04 First things first: before you go any further you should backup any important files, settings, dot files, and so on. Ubuntu 22.10 Codename Revealed – And It’s a Kookily Killer Choice

The codename of the next Ubuntu version has been revealed. Ubuntu 22.10 is the “Kinetic Kudu” — a kingly combination with which to crown the next short-term release of this colossally popular desktop Linux distro (yes, I’m running out of K words already). ‘Kinetic’ suggests there’ll be some real energy to the next release But what does it mean? Kinetic is a kooky if fitting choice. The word itself means “relating to or resulting from motion”. Given that 221.10 is the first post-LTS release it feels like a knowing adjective. Why? Cos Ubuntu desktop has some real gas in its :sys_more_orange:

How to Install Firefox as a .deb on Ubuntu 22.04 (Sorry, Snap!)

In this guide I detail how to install Mozilla Firefox as a .deb package on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and not as a Snap app. Ubuntu’s latest version includes Firefox as a Snap app by default. This Snap package is the only version of Firefox available ‘out of the box’. If you run apt install firefox on Ubuntu 22.04 it doesn’t install a .deb version but a transition package that will install the Firefox Snap. Which isn’t ideal if you don’t want to use the Firefox Snap package. Don’t get me wrong Snap apps have their pluses, but also a few :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu Brings Back Its Iconic Developer Summit

Ubuntu is reviving an in-person event at which developers and distro enthusiasts can get together to plan, hack on, and find ways to help improve the project. The new “Ubuntu Summit” is going to be held this autumn in an as-yet unannounced location. Canonical is heavily investing in its community outreach of late, with a swathe of new hires and a “reboot” of its online engagement initiatives. Now things are stepping up a gear. The new Ubuntu Summit sounds like it will channel the vibe of the original Ubuntu Developer Summit, the twice-yearly fixture that was, to be totally frickin’ :sys_more_orange:
