Firefox 106 Brings PDF Annotation & Gesture Nav to Linux

I’ve been a bit busy with site design changes and Ubuntu 22.10 release content writing so I missed that Firefox 106 was released. And, y’know what? Firefox 106 is actually a pretty meaty update, even if I’m not a fan of all of its changes. The browser’s rapid release cadence means big new features are few and far between, or introduced slowly over several releases. Not so here. Firefox 106 New Features Gesture navigation First off: you know the “gesture navigation” I’ve banged on about since June? Well, is it finally enabled by default, out-of-the-box, ready-to-use in Firefox 106. At :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu 22.10: What’s New? [Video]

Ubuntu 22.10 is primed, ready to release on October 20 and to help ratchet up the excitement I’ve put together a short video to showcase the release’s most exciting new features. Not that any of them will be a surprise if you read this blog often enough! All told, Ubuntu 22.10 is a fairly modest update to Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. While the inclusion GNOME 43 and the switch to PipeWire as its underlying audio stack are very positive changes, they’re not enough luscious enough to lure long-term support fans away from the bosom of stability. There’s still plenty to enjoy, :sys_more_orange:

Ubuntu’s New Terminal Ad is Angering Users

In September I tweeted a screenshot of something unexpected that has started to show up in the terminal when I ran system updates. It didn’t enrage me at the time (and it kinda still doesn’t) but I did find it a little …Off. Now, if you’re suitably tuned-in to the Linux newswire and/or an avid attendee of social media you’ll probably heard about the drama in question. If you haven’t, then allow me to… Yes, the furore is over an “ad” for Ubuntu Pro, Canonical’s revamped support offering that replaces/augments Ubuntu Advantage (which has been around for many years) that :sys_more_orange:

Firefox View Doesn’t Feel Like a Feature, Mozilla. It Feels Like a Nag

I run beta builds of Firefox on my desktop and noticed something unexpected had recently prepended itself to my browser’s tab bar. The unexpected addition (that masquerade as a pinned tab) is for new feature (in testing) called Firefox View. This is a dashboard-style overview showing your 3 most recently closed tabs, plus sections to “pickup” tabs you’re gawking at on your other devices, and promotion for more limited-edition “colorways” (no idea, lol). But… I need to digress 😆… As a Linux user I take for granted how omnipresent Firefox is. In FOSS-world, this browser is still a big deal; :sys_more_orange:

VirtualBox 7.0 Features Full VM Encryption, Better Support for Windows 11 + More

VirtualBox, the hugely capable open source virtualisation software, is now even more capable. Schlocky intro out of the way, I bring word that VirtualBox 7.0 is now available to download for Windows, macOS, and Linux. This is a big update that adds a stack of features and improvements including, most notably, enhanced support for Windows 11. Yes, with the latest build it’s possible to install Windows 11 in VirtualBox with minimal fuss. This is thanks to the addition of SecureBoot and TPM 1.2/2.0 support. Ghostwriter is a Deathly Good Distraction Free Writing App

If you’re looking for a smart, distraction free text editor for Windows, macOS, or Linux, check in with Ghostwriter. Ghostwriter is now part of the KDE app family proper, and for good reason: it’s a supremely competent, straightforward word processor with markdown support, including a toggle-able rich preview so that you can see your formatting in-situ, as you type. This app also auto-saves work as you type (so you can work with some ease of mind) and it has several advanced ‘distraction free’ features that help you tune out on what you’re doing. Oh — can I get a woo, :sys_more_orange:

Linux Mint 21.1 Codenamed ‘Vera’, Will Arrive at Xmas

Linux Mint has confirmed we’ll be able to get our hands on the first point-release follow-up to the (well received) Linux Mint 21 release by Christmas. Linux Mint lead Clement Lefebvre also shares the codename for Linux Mint 21.1 is “Vera”. This continues the distro’s tradition of giving each release within a series a female name beginning with the same letter (Linux Mint 21 was ‘Vanessa’, for example). While we don’t know much about plans for Linux Mint 21.1 — though it will continue to be based on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, ofc — a less cluttered desktop is in the :sys_more_orange:

Eager to Try Pop!_OS 22.10? Well, You Can’t…

Don’t hate me but I’ve some bad (if not entirely unsurprising) news for the Pop!_OS fans who plan to pounce on the presumed-to-be upcoming 22.10 release: you can’t. Before anyone groan: no, I’m not about to deliver a trite “…cOz vAnILLa ‘bUnTu is beTtEr” punchline. Sadly, Pop!_OS 22.10 is not going to be released this autumn — heck, it’s not even in development. System76’s software engineers want to take the time and effort prepping the next release would take and instead plough it in constructing their home-grown, Rust-based COSMIC desktop environment. System76’s Micheal Murphy confirmed the news in a Reddit :sys_more_orange:
