America had threatened sanctions if Turkey, a fellow NATO member, activated the system. Last year America cancelled the sale of 100 F-35 fighter jets to Turkey, in response to the purchase of the Russian weapons.

Health officials in South Korea said that the death of a 17-year-old was not linked to a flu vaccination he had received. Thirty-six people who had had the vaccine have died over the past week in South Korea, causing alarm, but the government insists the deaths are not connected to the jabs. The euro area’s IHS Markit purchasing-managers’ index covering both goods and services slipped to 49.4 in October, from 50.4 in September (any figure under 50 indicates contraction).
