Turning purple: the presidential race in the south

There is probably no better place in Georgia for Donald Trump to rally supporters than Macon, where he will appear this evening. Though Macon–Bibb County, which is largely African-American, backed Hillary Clinton in 2016, the surrounding counties are deeply conservative. Mr Trump needs votes there to offset his presumptive losses in Atlanta and its suburbs—the candidates are currently neck-and-neck in Georgia. The days of the Republican solid South are fading. Virginia is now safely Democratic. Joe Biden holds a small but steady lead in North Carolina. Besides Georgia, Florida and even Texas, which no Democrat has won since Jimmy Carter in 1976, are all in play. The South is changing: Atlanta’s suburbs are multiracial and Georgia’s black and Latino populations are growing faster than whites. North Carolina’s Research Triangle draws talent from all over the world. Virginia’s population now centres around the wealthy, highly educated suburbs of Washington, DC. The South’s future is purple.

A briefing by his spokesman to journalists was more blunt: “The talks are over.” Unless, that is, the EU changes its negotiating position: fisheries and state aid are the main areas of disagreement.

One hit wonder? The frenzy over K-pop and Big Hit

Shares of Big Hit Entertainment, the company the represents BTS, the world’s most successful boy band, begin trading on the Korean stock exchange today. The firm’s initial public offering, massively oversubscribed by both institutional investors and hardcore fans, has raised around $840m, putting Big Hit’s valuation at a cool $4bn. The IPO has already made BTS, who are shareholders, and their producer extremely rich. The jury is still out on whether it will do the same for investors. The success of BTS, whose popularity has helped spread K-pop globally, seems unlikely to abate for now. But the band currently accounts for nearly 90% of Big Hit’s revenue. Its seven twenty-something members may soon have to take a break from music to perform military service, which is still mandatory in South Korea. Until Big Hit comes up with another big hit, the company’s future will depend entirely on the loyalty of BTS’s fans.
