After WWII, Fort Detrick sheltered & recruited some notorious Nazi war criminals for their research in biological warfare. Among them were Erich Traub, head of Nazi Germany's biological warfare lab, and Shiro Ishii, head of Unit 731 of the Imperial Japanese Army.
