Want to Customise Libadwaita? Try ‘Gradience’

Some see the emergence of libadwaita as an intentional roadblock designed to get in the way of end-user customisation — but a new app added to Flathub this week proves otherwise. Gradience is a nimble desktop app written in Python, GTK4, and libadwaita. Using it you can change each and every colour that appears in the libadwaita theme (as well as the adw-gtk3 theme, should you have it installed). We’re talking background app colour, button colour, toggles, switches, radio boxes, and sliders; menus; dialogs; pop-overs; drop-down lists… There’s even an advanced tab where custom CSS code can be applied. It busts :sys_more_orange:

This Unofficial ‘Ubuntu Software’ App is Better Than Ubuntu’s Actual One

There’s an interesting and totally unofficial new desktop software store in development by the Ubuntu Flutter Community (though the app is designed to work on other distros also). It doesn’t have a name yet, nor any branding, and as it’s still in active development there are only alpha-quality snapshots to play with. Devs describe it as ‘an alternative software store for the Ubuntu Desktop made with Flutter‘, the app-development tech Ubuntu is all-in on. It’s not developed by Canonical (though Canonical employees do contribute to the code) and there’s no suggestion it’ll ever ship by default on the OS itself. :sys_more_orange:

KDE Plasma 5.25 Now Available for 22.04 LTS Users

If you’re running Kubuntu 22.04 LTS you can now upgrade to KDE Plasma 5.25, the latest stable release of the free, open source desktop environment. The Kubuntu team has made the update available to install from its backports PPA following requests from users. To be clear: this is not an automatic upgrade. The Kubuntu 22.04 LTS install image ships with KDE Plasma 5.24 by default, and that’s not changing. Instead, users who want to upgrade to Plasma 5.25 on Jammy can opt-in by adding the Kubuntu backports PPA and a new backports-extra PPA (technically the extra PPA can be used :sys_more_orange:

Firefox 104 Released with Tweaks to Reduce Battery Usage When Idle

As sure as the sun rises and sets, so a new version of the Mozilla Firefox web browser emerges every four weeks. And lo, Firefox 104 is ready for release. Before we look at what’s new, a quick word to those of you hoping to hear that Firefox’s new Linux touchpad gestures are enabled out-of-the-box: they’re now. But, as in Firefox 103, you can enable the Wayland-compatible feature yourself via the about:config section. Usual caveats apply. On to what is included in Firefox 104… If there’s a “headline” change to be found in this release it’s that performance of the :sys_more_orange:

Why Ubuntu 22.10 May Disable GNOME’s New ‘Device Security’ Panel By Default

Among the many GNOME 43 features is a new device security panel that informs users about the security status of their device. But users of Ubuntu 22.10 may be unable able to see it. A bug report filed by Ubuntu developers this weekend describes the new device security feature as “confusing and unhelpful” in its current incarnation. “A default Ubuntu install only gets us “Security Level 1”. The highest level is “Security Level 3”. There isn’t anything an Ubuntu user can do to get to a higher security level from the Device Security screen,” the bug report reads. “If a :sys_more_orange:

LibreOffice 7.4 is Out — And It Doubles-Down on Microsoft Office Compatibility

LibreOffice 7.4 is now available to download. This update arrives on schedule, six months post LibreOffice 7.3, which was a fairly notable release. In LibreOffice 7.4 the productivity suite’s devs deliver a deluge of fixes and enhancements aimed squarely at improving ‘interoperability with Microsoft’s proprietary file formats’. What’s more, many of the new features being added to LibreOffice are tailored to those who are migrating from MS Office to this free, open-source alternative. Y’know, keeping things familiar enough to not be scary. Interested to learn more? Let’s talk details. LibreOffice 7.4: New Features LibreOffice 7.4 bakes in support for WebP :sys_more_orange:

Nautilus 43 Beta Arrives in Ubuntu 22.10 Daily Builds

Nautilus 43 beta has arrived in the latest daily builds of Ubuntu 22.10 “Kinetic Kudu”. “And?”, you quizzically quip. Well, it’s not that big of a deal. However, I was eager to see ‘what the plan was’ for GTK4/libadwaita apps within the context of Ubuntu’s Yaru theme. Ubuntu 22.04, for those who’ve forgotten, intentionally held back on shipping a number of GTK4/libadwaita ports that were part of GNOME 42 — Nautilus among them. Well, I’m pleased to see (and say) that the new-look GTK4/libadwaita version of the Nautilus file manager sits proud within Ubuntu’s Yaru-themed desktop. Any custom Yaru accent :sys_more_orange:
