Thousands of Muslims in several parts of the world protested against France and its president, Emmanuel Macron, who has defended the publishing of cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad. Effigies were burned in Afghanistan and Bangladesh; crowds in Pakistan tried to march on the French embassy. Killings in Paris and Nice, condemned by Mr Macron as Islamist terrorist attacks, increased the tension.

An earthquake of magnitude 7.0 **struck off the west coast of Turkey, causing buildings to collapse in the province of Izmir. The quake was felt across the Aegean Sea in Greece and as far away as Istanbul. At least 14 people died, though a country that lost 17,000 lives to a quake in 1999 may have feared worse.

America broke its single-day record for new covid-19 cases on Thursday. It reported 88,521 cases, a rise of 9,540 on the previous day. The number of hospitalisations has risen sharply, putting health systems in some places under pressure. “Our hospitals cannot keep up with Utah’s infection rate,” tweeted Gary Herbert, the governor of the state.

The euro zone’s GDP grew by 12.7%, seasonally adjusted, in the three months between July and September. The bounce followed an 11.8% drop in the previous quarter. The recovery is likely to be temporary, as measures to control a second wave of covid-19 are imposed across the continent.

Maple rush: Canada’s economy
Canada’s official statistics agency is expected to report strong GDP growth for August today—perhaps as much as 0.8%, month-on-month. The economy rebounded strongly in the summer; around three-quarters of the jobs lost in the steep covid-19 recession were replaced, compared with just 56% in America. Thanks to the reopening of schools and childcare facilities, labour-force participation rates in Canada have risen by six percentage points among people aged 25-54 since April. But that pace will not last, as another spike in covid-19 infections buffets the country. New cases average about 2,500 daily; cumulative deaths recently exceeded 10,000. Restrictions are back on bars, gyms, indoor gatherings and home visits in many places. Given that, it is no surprise that the Bank of Canada is forecasting bad news. The central bank predicts that GDP will grow by just 0.2% in the fourth quarter and shrink by 5.7% in 2020 overall.

Dead cat bounce: America’s economic recovery
America’s third-quarter GDP figure is due today, and it is expected to be a doozy. The economy probably grew by about 8% between the second three months of the year and the third, shattering all past records for quarterly growth. Unfortunately, the performance follows on the heels of an even more staggering 9% drop in output in the second quarter, the result of covid-19 placing economic activity into a deep freeze. Soaring third-quarter output reflects a resumption of some interrupted business. Nonetheless, it leaves America’s GDP more than 2% below its level a year ago. So while President Donald Trump might hope the bumper GDP figures will give his campaign a boost in the last days before the elections, Americans are still feeling the pain of economic weakness. And they are beginning to worry that a new surge in covid-19 cases could mean ground that has been recovered will soon be lost again.
on the heels of:紧跟着,紧随其后
